At 6pm on a Friday evening a phone call from a distraught mother in Bulgaria. Her daughter, a student in USA on a visa, was seized from a ski slope and was, she believed being held in a women's detention facility in Connecticut, USA.
LWOB, located in Connecticut and familiar with the INS detainee program in that facility (having conducted an observation there) first contacted the nationals embassies in NY and Washington DC, to make them aware of her detainment (Vienna Convention notification). LWOB then put a lawyer on call who was ready to file papers on the girl's behalf on the following Monday, if necessary.
Epilogue: The girl was released within 24 hours of the LWOB contact to embassy officials from her country.
